Vihren Peak

Vihren is the highest peak of Bulgaria's Pirin Mountains. Reaching 2914 m, it is Bulgaria's second and the Balkans' third highest, after Musala and Mount Olympus. The peak is located in Pirin's northern parts. The easiest route is from the Vihren chalet (2,000 m), reaching the summit from the south. Other routes include those from Banderitsa chalet (1,800 m) or across the ridge Koncheto from the north. A number of Pirin's lakes are located around the peak.

Dobursko village and the old church

Dobursko village and the old church

One of the oldest settlements in the foot of Rila Mountain hides in its heart a real historic treasure. The village of Doburskois situated 180 km away from Sofia and 20 km away from the resort of Bansko. There, you can explore the church St. St. Teodor and Tiron Stratilat. The church was constructed in 1614. Many historians have examined it and written books and research papers about the sanctuary. Structure enabled the church survive Ottoman rule, since nearly half of the building is dug into the ground. St. St. Teodor and Tiron Stratilat is plain and almost unnoticeable from the outside, a fact compensated for by the interior that is richly painted and decorated. The unique wall paintings make historians wonder. Many rumors and stories about their origin have been circulated. Some of the theories focus on the modernistic looks of some icons. Skeptics sometimes call the church the place where the icon of Jesus Christ in a rocket is found. Many wall paintings seem to be unorthodox. According to some descriptions the halos of saints resemble helmets. Some unusual symbols like swastikas can be seen on the façade.

Melnik

Melnik

Melnik is the smallest and one of the most fascinating towns-museums in Bulgaria. Nestled amongst the lowest southwestern fold of Pirin. The climate of Melnik is favorable for medical treatment of chronic pulmonary, kidney and rheumatic disorders. Melnik is a blend of unique nature - the cliffs clustered around the houses on the hills, history, culture and wine. The silent white houses, one upon the other, with beautiful bay-windows and silent yards, buried in greenery and tranquility of an aged glory and prosperity arise nothing but admiration. Very few people know that the picturesque town, snuggled between the hills today, was an important economic center once, with more than 25 000 inhabitants, about 1300 houses and more than 70 churches. Perhaps, it was the ancient Thracians that laid the foundations of the city. The cobbled streets have witnessed in a row the feet of Slavs, Bulgarians, Greeks, Romans, Turks… Melnik is not only history and architecture – it is wine too. Original cellars are excavated in the sand pyramids, which surround the town on all sides, and there the famous Melnik wine ripens, matures and is preserved. Nowhere else can one find this technology. Neighboring Turkey like far away France and Spain chose the taste of this delicious, dark-red, matured wine.
