Agent's Description

Old house in a populated village in West Balkan, near the ancient town of Chiprovtsi. The location of the village high in the mountain and the nature around it are extremely attractive. The house comprises three rooms on the first floor and three basements on the ground floor, which, however is above the earth level, and these can be converted into a tavern or a double garage. There is a second big solid building in the property, which can also be converted into a house. Both buildings need renovation and repair. The garden is about 250 sq.m. The access is easy all over the year. The area is famous with its historic and natural sites and its hand wooden textile.

Location / Vicinity The town is situated in the northern slopes of Chiprovtsi Mountain of the Western Balkan Range, 35 km west of Montana. Population 3100. In Roman times it stands out as a major mining centre extracting iron, silver, gold and copper. The city is close to the town of Montana and only 5 km to the Chiprovski monastery. The Lopushanski monastery is 20 km. away, while the Belogradchik Rocks are 60 km away. Chiprovtsi is a small town nowadays. It is assumed that towards the 13th century, when Saxon ore-miners settled here, Chiprovtsi was granted special privileges. As time went by, the Germans were Bulgarised, but the positions of Catholicism in the town were continuously strengthened owing to the intensive activities of the Franciscan monks. For a long period of time Chiprovtsi was the seat of the Bulgarian Catholic custody, which comprised towns and villages now situated on the territories of Hungary and Romania. It was one of the centers of Catholic propaganda in the Balkans and in Eastern Europe. There are traditions in the crafts, however, are still vital. Chiprovtsi is famous for its rug industry. There is no evidence so far of carpet weaving before the 17th century, but the perfection of the design, composition and color schemes of the oldest rugs is indicative of an earlier tradition. From Chiprovtsi the carpet industry spread to the near by villages, where women have been engaged in rug-weaving for centuries ever since. It is typical of the rug industry in these quarters that more or less, production has always been market-oriented. This contributed to the fame of the Chiprovtsi rugs - both in Bulgaria, and on the Asian and Central European markets.

It survived the Madyar invasion in the 13th century, the fall under Ottoman rule in the 14th century and the raids of Mihail Hrabri in the 15th century. It served as a main shelter and also as a focal point in the uprisings of Konstantin Fruzhin in the 15th century and of the Chiprovtsi inhabitants in the 17th century.
