Additional Information
Belogradchik is situated about 170 km North-West from Sofia (E-79). The unique Belogradchik rocks are among the most beautiful natural landmarks in Bulgaria. Their fantastic outlines - human and animals figures, castles - seems to introduce us in a magic world. Situated in a 90 square km. surface, some of the rocks reach than 100 m. The Belogradchik fortress was constructed by the Romans in I-III century. The present view of the fortress dates from 1808-1837. For the construction was used the natural inaccessibility of the rocks.
"The Jewel in the Crown" is the Magura cave.It is near the village of Rabisha, 25km northwest of the town of Belogradchik, and 35 km from the town of Vidi on the Danub river. The niarest railway station, Dimovo, is 16 km far awai.
The cave is hollowed out in the Rabisha hill (461mabove sea level). It is va small monocline, which is part of the Belogradchik anticline. The cave is predominanly built up of Low Cretaceous, thick-layered (up to 140 m) white, china-like limestone. Three rifts were formed as a result of tectonic action. They were the main wais through which water penetrated into the limestone causing the Karst processes. The cave formation started 15 million years ago. The Torton river hollowed out in the limestone strata the impressive halls and galleries of the Magura. Later on huge slides blocked the approach in depth, where more galleries could be expected.
There is a good asphalt road, leading to the Magura cave. It is one of the first well laid out caves in Bulgaria - lighting, paths, safeguard fittings.
The cave and its surrounding area are declared a National Tourist Sight.

The Magura Cave
Located about 180 km from Sofia, near the town of Belogradchik, has been formed some 15 million years ago. Recognized by UNESCO as a cultural world heritage monument, the Magura cave is one of the most impressive touristic sites in Central-Eastern Europe. With its monumental proportions *(about 2500 meters of uncovered galleries), its exquisite rock embroidery and weird-shaped forms it resembles an underground Cathedral. What makes it unique, however, are the extremely well-preserved ancient paintings that adorn its walls. The oldest ones date back from before 8 thousand years and so far have no analogue in Bulgaria. Similar paintings have being found only in France, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula.
"Baba Vida" Museum-Fortress
Baba Vida (Bulgarian: Баба Вида) is a medieval fortress in Vidin in northwestern Bulgaria and the town's primary landmark. It consists of two fundamental walls and four towers and is said to be the only entirely preserved medieval castle in the country. Baba Vida served as Vidin's main defensive installation during the course of the Middle Ages and acted as the most important fortress of northwestern Bulgaria. The Baba Vida stronghold stood an eight-month-long siege by Byzantine forces led by Basil II, but was destroyed and once again erected during the rule of Ivan Stratsimir, as whose capital it served. Between 1365 and 1369, the fortress was in Hungarian hands. Vidin was suddenly attacked by the forces of Louis I of Hungary, but it took several months to conquer Baba Vida. In 1369, Ivan Sratsimir managed to regain control of his capital, albeit he had to remain under Hungarian overlordship. The fortress played a significant role during the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria, serving as a weapon warehouse and a prison, as it has been no longer used for defensive purposes since the end of the 18th century. Today, Baba Vida is a fortress-museum, where finds and intelligence about its history are kept. Being a popular tourist attraction, the fortress was restored to its former appearance.
