The Ustrem Monastery "Sveta Troitza" /Holy Trinity/

The Ustrem Monastery" Sveta Troitza" /Holy Trinity/ is situated near the village of Ustrem at a distance of 20 km from Topolovgrad. It has been built on this site in XIV c. which is mentioned in an Ottoman document from the beginning of XV c. The monastery's yard has the shape of irregular trapeze. There are housing and farming buildings to the north, west and east and in the middle is the main church "Sveta Troitza". The entrance to the monastery is by a wooden bridge over the clean waters of a brook. The present-day church's building is built in 1836. It is a three-nave, single-apside pseudo-basilica. The present-day church is built at the site of an old church which has been of the same length but a bit narrower. The local people call the monastery with another name - The Rebel's Monastery because in XVIII c. it houses the famous rebel Hristo Voivode from Sliven. From the historic evidence we learn that he became a monk and took the name of Hrisant and became a hermit in the cave, known as the Old Church. Supported by other rebels and local people he restores the monastery and becomes its abbot until his death. Here is his tombstone from 1813. The monastery has preserved icons from XIX c.
