Aladzha Monastery

Aladzha Monastery

The name of Aladzha monastery comes from the Turkish word for colourful ("aladzha") due most probably to the bright colours of its wall paintings, dating back to the early Middle Ages. The monk's cells, common rooms and sanctuaries, dug directly into the limestone rock and situated on two levels high above the ground, were connected via an external staircase. The lower floor hosted the monks' private cells, common rooms (i.e. kitchen, dining room) and a small church, while the upper level was dedicated entirely to a chapel. According to some historians, primitive monks' cells were built and inhabited already in the 4th century AC. The entire monastery is considered to date back to the 12th century AC. Unfortunately, nowadays only few of the frescoes are preserved (most of these to be found in the chapel) but the experience of visiting a monastery dug high above the ground into a steep rock is unforgettable.

Royal Palace Euxinograd

Royal Palace Euxinograd

Euxinograde is a former late 19th-century Bulgarian summer palace and park of the royal family on the Black Sea coast, 8 km north of the city of Varna. It is currently a governmental and presidential residence. The construction of the palace began soon after the land which it occupies was given to Alexander I Battenberg on 16 March 1882. Viennese architect Victor Rumpelmayer designed the palace, which was named Sandrovo in 1885 after the Italian diminutive of Alexander's name — Sandro. Later the knyaz extended the estate to its contemporary area of 80 hectares. However, no palace was built at that time. The palace was built by Tsar Ferdinand Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. The pediment and other materials of the right wing of Chateau de Saint-Cloud in France, a former royal residence, was brought to Bulgaria by Tsar Ferdinand and integrated in Euxinograd palace. He invited the Swiss architect Hermann Mayer and Bulgarian architect Nikola Lazarov to design the palace which was renamed Euxinograd in 1893 on the insistence of Princess Marie Louise, Ferdinand's first wife. The name comes from the Ancient Greek term for the Black Sea, Εuξεινος Πόντος (Euxeinos Pontos, "hospitable sea") and the South Slavic suffix –grad, meaning "town" or, historically, "fortress".

The Royal Residence in Balchik

The Royal Residence in Balchik

The Royal Palace, the Botanical Gardens, the churches, the Museum of History, the Art gallery and many other attractions make Balchik one of the most interesting places at the Black Sea coast. Queen Maria of Romania selected Balchik to build her summer residence to which she gave the name “Quiet Nest”. The royal residence was built following plans of the Italian architects Americo and Augistino. A number of Bulgarian artists and craftsmen from the area also contributed to the transformation of the rural landscape into an elegant sanctuary for elite Romanian society.
