Additional Information
Although classified as a village, Momchilovtsi is relatively large compared to other villages in the Rhodopes, with approximately 3,000 inhabitants and 550+ houses.
The houses and properties in the village are built within an “amphitheatre" shape with hills and forest on 3 sides with the village cradled in the centre. In the 2000s Momchilovtsi established itself as a centre of tourism, with snowboarding, village tourism, small family hotels and sports facilities.
In the heart of the Central Rhodope Mountains, at an altitude of 1,200 m, Momchilovtsi lies 240 km from Sofia, 100 km from Plovdiv and 12 km from the nearest town of Smolyan. It is also 16km eastwards from the ski resorts of Pamporovo and Chepelare. Pamporovo is also known to be the sunniest ski resort in Bulgaria and possibly Europe because of its location near to the Greek border.
The surrounding area boasts a favourable geographic location and sufficient natural factors to make it an ideal location to live in and a popular holiday target: good transport access, mountain climate with a marked Mediterranean influence, clear steams abounding in Balkan trout, a wealth of wild fruit, herbs and mushrooms, rich and varied fauna, protected natural phenomena and wildlife reserves. Outdoor activities in Momchilovtsi and the surrounding area include the Snowboard Park just outside the village and many mapped out routes and areas for walking, trekking and other outdoor activities all year round. It is also ideal located for visiting many places of interest, it is a photographer’s paradise and its serenity and magic cannot fail to capture you. There several new projects planned (or underway) for the area surrounding Momchilovtsi which include: a new golf course approx.15 minutes drive from the village; the linking of the 3 main ski resorts of Chepelare, Pamporovo and Mount Perelik (The Perelik Project) making Pamporovo the largest ski resort in Bulgaria. Mount Perelik is the highest peak in the Rhodope Mountains. Also, the new Mechi Chal resort project in Chepelare will give the small mountain town an international centre status for winter sports and mountain tourism. Chepelare is only 15 minutes from Momchilovtsi. Also, a road widening and upgrading project is currently underway from Plovdiv, via Smolyan to Greece which is nearing completion, will mean that the journey from Momchilovtsi to the Aegean Sea will be possible in 1.5 hours.

Nearby Landmarks and Attractions
Bratsigovo
The village is situated in Southern Bulgaria. It is located in the Foothills of the Rodope Mountains on the banks of the Umishka River, and is close to the towns of Peshtera and Krichim. Historical records show the township was established at some point in the 16th century, built over the ruins of an earlier settlement. Archaeological evidence has shown that the area was inhabited by Thracians and later Slavs. The town is developing as a balneological center, too. There is a cold mineral water spring (18-26 C) with the flow rate of 120 litres per minute at the distance of 500 metres west of it. There is a balneo-sanatorium built up here. The mineral water treats some skin diseases, the nervous system, kidney related diseases and others. There is a nice park and a country-houses zone around it.
The Antique Teatre in Plovdiv
The Antique Theatre is one of the most famous monuments in Bulgaria. It was built in the beginning of the 2nd century during the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan. It is situated in the natural saddle between the Dzhambaz Tepe and Taksim Tepe hills. It is divided into two parts with 14 rows each divided with a horizontal lane. The theatre could accommodate 3,500 people. The three-storey scene is located on the southern part and is decorated with frezes, cornices and statues. The theatre was studied, conserved and restored between 1968 and 1984. Many events are still held on the scene including the Verdi festival and the International Folklore festival.
The old town in Plovdiv
Currently, Plovdiv is a modern city with an ancient spirit and charm, emanating from its numerous remains of old times. No doubt the biggest sight of Plovdiv is The Old Town. The Old Town is declared an archaeological reserve and covers the three-hill area where the town was located originally. Almost all historical sights of Plovdiv can be found there – religious sanctuaries, old residential and public buildings, archeological monuments and museums, fortress walls and narrow cobbled streets.
